Enlarged or overdeveloped male breast tissue is also known as gynecomastia. Areolas can become enlarged as well. This is a condition that can affect newborn males, developing young boys, adolescent boys and adult men. Hormonal changes, weight gain/obesity, heredity or certain medications may be the cause. It is necessary to determine the underlying cause prior to surgery.
Gynecomastia can be a source of emotional distress and embarrassment to males of all ages with the condition. There are many negative and insulting terms such as “man-boobs” or “moobs”.
The lifestyle in South Florida is active and the weather is warm. Men with gynecomastia often avoid athletic activities requiring removing a shirt such as swimming. They may even avoid physical intimacy due to embarrassment.
Reduction mammoplasty for men is a surgery to reduce or remove overdeveloped glandular and fatty tissue and/or excess skin of the breasts. The surgery can address
- Enlarged fatty breast tissue resistant to exercise and diet
- Enlarged glandular breast tissue
- Uneven or asymmetrical breast enlargement
- Reduce enlarged areolas
This surgery often improves male self-esteem by defining a more flat and masculine chest.
Depending on the nature and of the enlarged breast tissue, surgery can be done with liposuction or may be a combination of excision of glandular tissue with liposuction.
Adolescent males must be over 16 years of age and are candidates as long as breast development has stabilized.
After the surgery, you will have a chest compression garment to wear for several weeks. Most patients can resume regular exercise and activity within 1-2 weeks of surgery.
As with all facial plastic surgery, a thorough health assessment and realistic expectations are prerequisites. Your understanding of procedures, routines, and risks is essential to a successful final result. Following your consultation, we continue our discussion at the preoperative appointment.
The success and safety of your facelift depends very much on your complete candidness during your initial consultation. Your doctor will ask a number of questions about your health, desires, and lifestyle.
